LionHeart makes new board appointments

LionHeart has officially appointed two new trustees and two associate board members following its most recent board meeting last week.

Sarah Sandbrook and Clare Clague were appointed as trustees, while Kate Wheway and Adil Sajjad become LionHeart’s second pair of associate board members. All were formally appointed at a board meeting in London last week after an application and interview process earlier in the summer.

Welcoming them, LionHeart chair Philippa Sampson-Bancroft FRICS said: “We are delighted to welcome the four new faces to the board; their passion and commitment to LionHeart really shone through in the selection process.

“All four bring a range of professional and lived experience to the board and will contribute new perspectives to the existing cohort of trustees. It’s particularly special to welcome them to LionHeart in this celebratory year in which we mark our 125th anniversary as an independent charity, and look to the future as we finalise our strategic priorities for the next few years.”

Sarah is a Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development and has led HR functions and built teams both in the UK and internationally. She became aware of LionHeart’s work through her connections with the surveying profession and said: “I've seen in my professional life how, in today's changing and challenging world, people can quite suddenly find themselves in difficulty. They can however, with the right support, get back on their feet. It is a privilege being able to support the critical work LionHeart does in this field."

Clare Clague MRICS is a chartered commercial surveyor turned fundraising manager, who will take a special interest in LionHeart’s fundraising strategy.

Kate Wheway and Adil Sajjad have been appointed as associate board members after LionHeart’s first associates - Grace Conisbee and So Sum Lee - successfully concluded their two-year terms. The new positions were created in 2022 with the specific aim of further diversifying the LionHeart board, by removing the traditional barriers of experience for younger or early career surveyors to gain board level skills and experience.

As an armed forces veteran with 14 years’ service in the Royal Navy, Kate began a brand new career as a quantity surveyor in 2019.

Adil is a building surveyor currently working towards his MRICS and is also a committee member of the RICS Local Professional Association Birmingham.

Having seen the positive impact of LionHeart through a close friend’s experience, Adil was motivated to apply for the board position, adding: “I am dedicated to contributing to LionHeart’s mission and expanding its reach. My experience as a BAME professional drives me to ensure that the charity’s resources benefit everyone in our field."

He will become LionHeart’s patron when he takes up his presidential position.

LionHeart CEO Phil Sparke said: “It was great to have Justin come along to meet our board and show his interest in the work LionHeart does, as well as chat about how the two organisations can continue to work closely together to benefit the wider profession.”
